Vintage 1973 Canadian one-dollar banknote
Bank of Canada staff referred to this series of bank notes as the multicolored series for the color patterns that flow behind the dominant color theme of each note.
Design: The front features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse depicts Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
History: Thanks to a bank note, an image of a river of logs floating past Parliament Hill has long lived in Canadian collective memory. Though beautiful and evocative, the image is actually showing an accident.
Signatures: Ruston William Lawson Deputy Governor and Gerald Keith Bouey Governor
Discontinuation: This was the last $1 note issued by the Bank of Canada. The production of $1 notes ceased in 1989, two years after the introduction of the $1 coin (the "loonie") in 1987. Banks were instructed to stop circulating the banknotes and send them to the Bank of Canada for destruction after June 1989.
